Gemfibrozil.
Gemfibrozil increases VLDL clearance by stimulating vascular endothelial cell lipoprotein lipase activity. Gemfibrozil binds to PPAR-alpha which, in turn, increases fatty acid oxidation and reduces triglycerides levels.
Indications:
• severe hypertriglyceridemia with or without low HDL cholesterol.
• Mixed hyperlipidemia when a statin is contraindicated or not tolerated.
• Primary hypercholesterolemia when a statin is contraindicated or not tolerated.
